It does not thin the blood, but blocks the clotting factors, stopping harmful clots from getting larger. Coumadin therapy must be monitored with careful blood tests, protimes, which measure the time it takes for blood to clot. The protime must remain in a therapeutic range. Protimes are checked monthly, weekly, or as needed, in order to monitor the effectiveness of the Coumadin. On the basis of the results of the blood tests, the daily dose of Coumadin may be adjusted to keep the clotting time within the recommended therapeutic range.
